Safe Handling Cookware
Even old hands in the kitchen from time to time need a refresher on how to use and care for cookware safely to avoid injuries and preserve the life of your cookware.
General Cookware Care and Safety Tips
Never leave cookware unattended
Unattended cookware can boil dry or can become very hot. This can damage the cookware, cause fires or personal injury.
What can happen if a piece of cookware boils dry:
Aluminum cookware - Cookware with aluminum bases may melt and separate if they boil dry. DO NOT touch the pan or you could severely burn yourself. Turn off the burner and wait for the pan to cool completely before attempting to remove the pan.
Clad stainless steel cookware - Pans that boil dry may warp and become discolored.
Porcelain enamel - Never leave this type of cookware on a glass top cook top. If it overheats or boils dry it may fuse to the glass top range and you will need to replace the range top.
Use the correct sized burner for the your cookware
The burner you use should always match the size of the cookware you are using. If you are cooking with gas, to prevent damage to your cookware make sure the flame does not go up the sides of the pan.
Don't slide your cookware
Don't slide or cookware on the surface of your range top. This may cause unnecessary wear on your pan and scratch your range top.
Keep Cookware Out of the Microwave
Do not use metal cookware in a microwave. Only use items that are designated microwave safe.
Keep Nonstick Pans Out from Under the Broiler
Nonstick cookware is not designed to withstand broilers.
Use Potholders
To avoid burns use potholders when removing cookware from the oven or when touching warm handles and knobs. |
